When to Book a Newborn Photographer (A Guide for Southeast Wisconsin Moms)

If your baby is due in March, April, or May, here’s the short answer to when to book a newborn photographer: sooner than you think. The best time is before you feel like you need to.

Newborn sessions happen in the first few weeks of life, and those weeks go by in a blur of feedings and very little sleep. Planning ahead now means that when your baby arrives, all you have to do is send me a quick text. Here’s everything expecting moms in Mequon, Cedarburg, and across Southeast Wisconsin ask me about booking and preparing for a newborn session.

When Should I Book My Newborn Photographer?

Book during your second trimester. I schedule newborn sessions around your due date, and spring spots go while moms are still decorating the nursery. If you’re due this spring, now is the time to reach out.

Once you book, I hold your spot based on your due date. Babies rarely follow the calendar, so we simply adjust once your little one arrives.

How Old Should My Baby Be?

I photograph newborns within their first two weeks. At this age, babies are sleepy, curl up easily, and still have that brand-new newborn look. Life happens, though, so if those first two weeks get away from you, I can photograph babies up to one month old. Text me when baby arrives, and we’ll pick your session date together.

Where Do Newborn Sessions Happen?

You can choose my Kewaskum studio or your own home. My studio is kept warm, quiet, and ready for baby. For an in-home session, I come to you and photograph your family in the spaces that are already part of your story. I welcome families from all over Southeast Wisconsin, and I’m proud to be a Mequon newborn photographer and Cedarburg newborn photographer for so many local families, plus Grafton and West Bend.

Posed or Lifestyle?

You don’t have to choose just one. In the studio, I can create a traditional posed look, with the wrapped, curled, sleepy portraits most people picture, or a more relaxed lifestyle look. Many of my families love a mix of both.

In-home sessions are all lifestyle. We keep props minimal and focus on baby with the people (and pets) who love them most, in your nursery, bedroom, and living room. These images are candid and relaxed, never stiffly posed. We’ll plan the style that fits your family before your session.

What Should I Bring?

  • Diapers and wipes (more than you think you’ll need)
  • Everything you need for feeding
  • A pacifier, even if baby doesn’t take one (it’s a great help for settling baby into poses)
  • A change of clothes for mom and dad, just in case
  • Snacks or drinks if you have special dietary needs

I keep snacks and water on hand for parents, and I have the wraps, props, and outfits for baby. Dress in layers, since the studio is kept extra warm for your newborn.

What Should Parents and Siblings Wear?

Think soft, solid neutrals: cream, oatmeal, soft gray, or muted earth tones. Skip logos, busy patterns, and bright colors, which pull attention away from baby. Simple, fitted pieces photograph beautifully when you’re holding your newborn close.

Mamas, my client closet has gowns for an elevated look, so you don’t have to shop while you’re recovering. I also have clothing for big brothers and sisters ages 1 to 8.

If you’re dressing siblings yourself, choose comfortable outfits in your family’s colors. I like to photograph siblings early in the session while they’re fresh, then let them head home or relax with a snack.

What If My Baby Is Fussy?

Every baby has fussy moments, and that’s completely okay. Newborn sessions are baby-led. We stop to feed, snuggle, and settle as often as needed, and I never rush. Fussy moments almost always turn into sleepy ones. Your baby’s safety and comfort come first in every pose.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

Plan on about two to three hours. That leaves plenty of time for feedings and breaks, so the morning feels calm instead of rushed.

What Happens After Your Session?

Your gallery is only the beginning. I offer heirloom albums, wall art, and highlight films so your newborn photos don’t get lost on a phone. Take a look at William’s newborn session to see his highlight film and the album his family holds today.
