Why Your Child Doesn’t Have to Smile the Whole Time for Beautiful Family Photos

One of my recent sessions at my private wildflower field in Kewaskum, Wisconsin was the perfect reminder that the best moments often happen when we stop expecting perfection.


When this sweet family arrived, their little girl wasn’t interested in smiling for the camera. She felt shy, unsure, and simply wanted to do her own thing. Instead of forcing poses or asking for “just one smile,” we slowed down.

We let her explore.


She wandered through the wildflowers, gently grazing her hands across the blooms and picking a few flowers as she went. There was no pressure. No rush. Just space to be exactly who she was.

Little by little, her personality started to shine.


The shy glances turned into tiny smirks. Those quiet moments became genuine expressions that her mom absolutely fell in love with. They weren’t forced smiles—they were real memories, beautifully preserved.


Tips for a Stress-Free Session with Small Children

Follow their lead.

Young children are naturally curious. Giving them a little freedom to explore often helps them feel comfortable much faster than asking them to sit still.


Don’t stress about perfect smiles.

Some of my favorite images are the quiet ones—a thoughtful look, a little grin, or the way your child reaches for your hand. Those moments tell your family’s story.


Let them play.

Whether it’s picking flowers, twirling in a field, or chasing bubbles, movement creates authentic moments that feel joyful and effortless.
